Organist

Benedict Todd was born in Huddersfield but grew up in East Anglia. Much of his early musical education took place in and around the city of Ely, where he was at school and sang as a chorister in the cathedral choir. In 2007 he moved south-west to study at the University of Bristol, first for a BA in Music (2010) specialising in performance and composition, and then an MA (Composition, 2011). He completed his PhD in Composition in 2017, having studied under the supervision of Dr Michael Ellison and Professor John Pickard.

Benedict has played in churches and cathedrals across the UK, Republic of Ireland and the Czech Republic. While studying in Bristol he spent four years as Organ Scholar at St Paul's, Clifton, where he also directed the University of Bristol Church Choir. From 2011 to 2012 he held the post of Organ Scholar at Blackburn Cathedral, regularly playing for cathedral services and accompanying many of the cathedral's various choirs. During his doctoral studies, Benedict was appointed as the Assistant Director of Music at St James-the-Great, Dursley (Glos.), where he spent two and a half happy years accompanying and helping to direct the thriving parish choir. In November 2016 he returned to Cambridgeshire to take up his current post of Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Great St Mary's, the University Church in Cambridge. Here he accompanies and helps to rehearse and direct the several junior and adult choirs which make up the active music department. Benedict is an Associate of the Royal College of Organists and is in regular demand as a freelance accompanist and recitalist.
