from a selection of Benedict’s organ performances

Great St Mary’s, Cambridge   2021

During the Covid-19 pandemic, there where several periods when Great St Mary’s, the University Church in Cambridge, could only hold services online. During these periods, Benedict recorded organ music for use at these virtual services using the church’s two organs. Here are some highlights from those recordings.

  • Parish Organ

  • Grand Chœur    Théodore Salomé
  • Song Without Words    Arthur Wills
  • Festival Voluntary    Flor Peeters
  • University Organ

  • Voluntary for Double Organ   Orlando Gibbons
  • Chorale prelude on ‘Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme’ (BWV 645)   J S Bach
  • ‘Con spirito’ (No.6 of ‘Six short and easy pieces’)   Henry Smart
  • These recordings where made at various points during 2021 at Great St Mary’s, the University Church, Cambridge, while the church was closed during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. Benedict is playing both the Kenneth Jones 1991 Parish Organ and the Smith/Hill/Mander (et al.) University Organ. The latter was first built in 1698 and, although it has been extensively modified over the years, still contains one of the largest known single collections of pipework originally made by ‘Father’ Bernard Smith. You can find out more information about the organs on this sheet or on the National Pipe Organ Register, which has listings for both the Parish Organ and the University Organ. Other recordings from this period, as well as more recent livestreamed services, can be found on the Great St Mary’s YouTube channel.
